I've seen it done and even have a few in the pile, but I'm afraid the light wood is too soft. I'm willing to be re-educated.

Janka chart shows it slightly harder than Rock Maple.
Sure would look cool.

I've used it for binding but not for a fretboard...

It works well for a fretboard. I use tung oil finish on them though, keeps it from looking grimy.

I have a zebra fretboard cut and ready for my current zebra build. I plan to use tung oil on it as Aaron suggested. I've used the tung oil on previous fretboards, and one with white sap wood. It protected the sap wood from getting dirt ground into it.

Looks cool but it smells weird when you work it. Like dirty socks.
